I have been following Bat for Lashes on Spotify for a while and since this album is music-wise totally great and I'm a big newfound fan, I decided to buy a CD. There is this one thing: the CD appears to be somehow protected to not play on a computer. Two Suns is Bat for Lashes' second studio album, released on 3 April 2009. It was produced by Natasha Khan herself and David Kosten, who also worked on her debut album, Fur and Gold.
The album explores the idea of duality (two lovers, two planets, two sides of a personality, two landscapes – the city and the desert) and metaphysical ideas concerning the connections between all existence.
During her stay in New York, Khan would dress up as Pearl, her destructive New Yorker alter ego who acted as a direct foil to Khan’s more mystical, desert-born spiritual self. Pearl is featured on three songs: “Siren Song”, “Pearl’s Dream” and the closing track “The Big Sleep”. Khan further said about her alter ego:
“I really just did it as an experiment of dressing up myself with quite garish extreme feminine make-up. I wanted to photograph myself in that situation and just see what it made me feel.”
Compared to her debut, Two Suns is more beat programming, drums-driven. Khan believed that living in Brooklyn when bands such as MGMT and Gang Gang Dance were emerging on the music scene had an influence on the album’s musical style.
The album was preceded by lead single “Daniel”, “Pearl’s Dream” and “Sleep Alone.”
