Trivandrum Lodge combines elements from various film genres such as romance, drama, thriller, black comedy and off-color humor. It follows the lives of the residents in a lodge and their relationships. According to the director, 'it is a tale of love, lust and longing set in a lodge.'[2] With a very unconventional screenplay which unfolds through these peculiar characters, their experiences and transformations rather than sticking to the usual beginning, middle and end format.

The film released on 20 September. It received notably positive to mixed reviews from critics with some critics praising the film for its bold plot and unconventional way of characterisation while others criticising it for being offensive and for frequently crossing the limit of decency under the guise of bold experiments. The changing sexual mores depicted in the film also received wide criticism from the cultural and literary circles of Kerala. The film was however well received at the box office.[3]

Plot[edit]

Trivandrum Lodge, situated in Kochi and its inmates form the backdrop of the film. Abdu (Jayasurya) is a man who does odd jobs for living including being masseur at a spa and being the driver of a wealthy businessman. He is also obsessed about sex, being sex-starved. Shibu Vellayani (Saiju Kurup) is a cinema reporter who works with a not-so-well-known film magazine, and persuades women to sleep with him for roles in films. Kora (P. Balachandran) is a retired clerk from the secretariat who boasts about having had sex with 999 women in his life and who wishes to have a policewoman as his 1000th. Satheeshan (Arun), wants to be an actor. Shibu promises to help him and has even given Satheeshan a new name, Sagar. Arthur Relton (Janardhanan) and Peggy Aunty (Sukumari) are the oldest inmates. Relton teaches piano and lives in the world of music while Peggy Aunty runs a canteen inside the lodge.

The owner of the lodge is Ravisankar (Anoop Menon), a rich widower who has a son Arjun (Master Dhananjay). Ravisankar's mother was a concubine to many rich men and all his wealth basically comes from her earnings. This caused Ravisankar's father Narayanan (P. Jayachandran) to move away from the family years before. He runs a small hotel, away from his son's world.

It is into this world of Ravi, Narayanan and all the inmates of Trivandrum Lodge that Dhwani (Honey Rose) makes her entry. She is divorced, wants to be free, eat good food and as she herself says, 'fornicate with abandon'. Dhwani comes to stay at Trivandrum Lodge, aiming to write a novel with Kochi as the backdrop. Her intentions not so honourable, the sexually-repressed souls of Trivandrum lodge go into a tizzy. Then on Dhwani and Abdu have a deep affectionate love, after she pays Abdu to act as her lover in a hotel room to stop her husband from asking her to take him back.the story develops based on all this. The film also discusses in detail the adolescent romance between Arjun and his classmate Amala, the unconditional romance between Ravisankar and his wife Malavika, who has died. Dhwani is fascinated by his ability to stay true to one woman even after she passes away and the broken love story of Relton and Peggy.

Production[edit]

'The film is called Trivandrum Lodge but film is set in Mattancherry in Kochi. Trivandrum Lodge is the name of an old lodge located in there.'The story of the film revolves around the lives of a group of people who stay in the lodge. The lodge is just a metaphor for the happenings in the film, which won't be having a conventional beginning, middle and end,' says the director. 'It will be a tale of love, lust and longing. Each character evolves as the film progresses, from situation to situation.' The actors have been seen in unusual looks for the film; Jayasurya with braces on his teeth and a chin curtain beard.'

—V. K. Prakash about the film.[5]

After the bumper success of the movie Beautiful, director V. K. Prakash wanted to meet the audience with another feel good movie. Trivandrum Lodge brings together the key names behind Beautiful once again. While Anoop Menon was in charge of the scripts and was to play a pivotal role, Jayasurya came up in the lead role.[6]

Casting[edit]

Jayasurya was chosen to be play the character without further remarks, initially Padmapriya was chosen to play the female lead, but opted out after some changes in the script because she believed there is very little scope for her to perform.[7]Rumours said that the role was later given to Meghana Raj, but the role was actually given to Honey Rose who came through with a different character as Dhwani by the film.[8]The film marked a comeback of sorts for veteran singer Jayachandran who had previously acted in 80's flicks such as 'Nakhakshathangal' and 'Lekhayude Maranam Oru Flashback'.[9] Writer P. Balachandran and singer Nikhil also appear in major supporting roles. Bhavana was cast to play a very small cameo role as the wife of the Anoop Menon's character in the film, and that the actress had agreed to do it readily.[10] Devi Ajith was cast after a big break to play Zarina, a close friend of Dhwani.[11] Thesni Khan plays Kanyaka, a role she herself enacted in V. K. Prakash's 2011 film Beautiful. Babu Namboothiri plays Thangal, a professional pimp, reprising the famous role he played in Padmarajan's cult classicThoovanathumbikal, which got great applause from viewers.

Filming[edit]

The film began its shoot and held its pooja or launch on 22 April 2012 in Fort Kochi, while other locations are Mattancherry and Thiruvananthapuram. Cinematography was done by Pradeep Narayanan to mark this first in Malayalam cinema, while Aravind operates the helicam. The film was the first ever film to have scenes shot by the helicam, which is a mix of the two: a remote controlled mini-helicopter captures aerial shots with the help of a video camera.[12]

Critical reception[edit]

The film opened to mixed to positive responses from the critics. Sujit Chandra Kumar stated in his review for Deccan Chronicle: 'While the director-scriptwriter duo succeeds in creating lively and well-developed characters, the plot fails to be gripping as it enters the most dramatic phase.' Rating the film , the critic was all praise for the film's cinematography, music and the lead performances.[13] Unni R. Nair of Kerala9.com rated the film and concluded his review calling the film, 'Different, bold, well-scripted, well-directed and with good performances.'[14]Sify.com gave a verdict of 'below average' and went on to tell 'A disturbingly offensive film, which frequently crosses every limit of decency under the guise of bold experiments'.[15] Paresh C. Palicha of Rediff.com rated the film and said, 'Trivandrum Lodge is a frank retelling of people's cravings and desires and if not entirely successful, it does have something going for it.'[16] Aswin J. Kumar of The Times of India rated the film and concluded his review saying, 'Trivandrum Lodge commands interest not because it displays bluntness with regard to love and lust, but remains honest in its narrative.'[17] Nowrunning.com and Indiaglitz.com also gave the film average reviews.[18][19]

Beautiful' tried to start a trend in Mollywood by speaking in more bolder and open ways than ever before. Though the film was appreciated much, none of our filmmakers had the guts to contemplate the thoughts with similar flicks. But now the same team of V K P and Anoop Menon is getting bolder, taking and generating heat about unconcealed sexuality, discussing and reflecting thoughts that are generally considered taboo in a highly hypocritical society. And the results are pretty encouraging.., continuous applause for those quality minds for talking straight. Yes, the crew deserves it, hats off Anoop Menon, Jayasuriya and V K P for offering this unusual movie.

The movie opens with that much discussed helicam shots of old `Trivandrum Lodge', occupying a hot spot at the beautiful backwaters of Kochy, where a host of unrelated people had been taking an abode for long, away from their families. The inmates ranges from the music teacher Relton(Janardhanan), Peggy (Sukumari) who runs a small hotel there to provide food to all inmates, Sunil vellayani(Saiju Kurup),editor of a film magazine , Abdhu(Jayasuriya)-an uneducated , illiterate orphan, Adv Kora(Balachandran), wannabe film star Sagar(Arun), and a group of mimicry artists. The ancient hotel belongs to the realtor Ravishankar, who is maintaining it following a word that he had given to his deceased wife Malavika(Bhavana).

As usual with the group of younger males, the discussions in the hotel are more centred on the urge for sex and ladies. Abdhu who is working as a masseur at a spa is longing to have a physical affair, but manages with nothing due to his unapproachable behaviours. The arrival of Dhwani(Honey rose) a recently divorced English writer to a room in the hotel was more than a shocker for its inmates. She is actually there to write one novel in the backdrop of Mattancherry and to have a first hand experience of the downtown and raw life without conditions, one -night stands and to enjoy the freedom as never before. Intertwining with the happenings of the lodge is the innocent love story of the school goer Arjun, the only son of Ravishankar. The movie which is truly a distinct tale of love, lust and longing '(as its promotional tags) also unfolds in a refreshing, unconventional scripting format.

The movie is an apt follow through for that heavily engaging beautiful; this time much of the outstanding frames by Pradep Nair weaves poetry around the most happening city of Kerala. There is the courage to bring a diverse issue out in the open, narrating a daringly different story without getting preachy. Witty, funny and also emotional this forward-thinking, progressive commercial cinema vastly enlightens and hugely entertains the new generation audiences, but it needs to be seen whether the families of Kerala are prepared to have a take on its heavy content. The movie has an assortment of sexually explicit dialogues and also extensive use of tainted language, that but appeals. A number of dramatic scenes get enhanced due to these blazing lines. Having said that we'd like to add that the movie loses some steam [for a few minutes] in the post-interval portions, but, thankfully, the life in the lodge doesn't get unbalanced. The movie accomplishes what it sets out to do - it enlightens and entertains and that, in our opinion, is no puny achievement. V K Prakash, once again etches out a near to prefect direction, also bringing in high standards from his technical department and awesome performances from his cast. To depict an intricate and complex character like Abdhu is not everyone's cup of tea and we doubt if any actor could've portrayed the part as brilliantly as Jaysuriya, with his body language and expressions that is the hallmark of enterprise . As his choice of films proves it, this truly versatile, courageous and flexible actor illustrates a character which many mainstream actors may not choose to implement. Honey rose also does everything with effortlessness, self-assurance, brilliance and decorum and that's not an easy thing to do by any standard.

And as usual, Anoop Menon comes up with a role that easily stands out due to his trademark ease and style. The characters' bitter-sweet relationship with his father, and unending longing for his wife is safe in his screen personality. The son debating over the virtues of his prostitute mother with his father is the rarest of the sequences we have plotted in any of the Indian movies. Anoop Menon also need a special mention for the screenplay which not once does deviate to the tried and tested track. It's engaging content from commencement to conclusion, one joy ride you can't afford to miss. Add to this the fine songs by M Jayachandran(Kilikal Parannatho' is our pick) and editing by Mahesh Narayanan. The relatively soft but electrifying BG scores from Bijipal is also commendable.

You cannot devise movies like Trivandrum Lodge targeting its box-office potential or its commercial prospects. Movies with such an audacious theme generally ignite debates and this lodge is sure to meet with severe reactions. The makers ought to be prepared for some bouquets and brickbats. Anyhow, a definite prescription for the new generation audience, who wants to taste more of bolder themes.
